Diaspora Map: Embroidery and hair on raw American fabric;

Photograph, acrylic painting, and hair on canvas. 50x50cm

As a form of reflection on the Wet Nurse Series , Diaspora was born. An installation of embroidery and hair, made together with the artist's Black matriarchs, to (re)construct the history of their ancestors. The work also includes a video-performance, photographs of the process, and a self-portrait painting. Thus begins her journey in constructing images that portray the artist's experience through self-documentation. In addition, the hair used is from Mayara's personal collection of hairstyles and hairpieces over the years. The installation was exhibited in 2019 during the 1st Black Art Brazil Biennial in Porto Alegre and also in 2018 at the School of Fine Arts of Minas Gerais. This work was presented at the conclusion of the course at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Minas Gerais (2019), under the guidance of Professor Wagner Leite and a panel composed of Janaína Barros and Brígida Campbell.
