The Creature is a publication edited by Clarice G. Lacerda, Ing Lee, and Maria Trika that presents works by 29 female creators in homage to the 200th anniversary of the publication of Frankenstein ; or, The Modern Prometheus by Mary Shelley . I was part of the team of artists, and in my illustration, I chose to honor Sarah Baartman, a Black woman whose body was trivialized and exhibited as an aberration in 19th-century Europe. She became popularly known as the " Hottentot Venus ." Like Frankenstein, Sarah's body was used as an experiment for the gaze of others during and after her life, remaining in France until March 2003, when, after protests, her body was returned to her homeland and finally laid to rest.
